In August 2009, Typhoon Morakot severely damaged the southern part of Taiwan, several villages were half or totally destroyed by landslides caused by the record-breaking rainfalls in history. Laiyi Village in Laiyi Township, Pingtung County, Taiwan, was one of those villages that took the most impact.

The following year 2010, Typhoon Fanapi struck again. It wasn’t until 2011 that, with the cooperation of the public and private sectors, the villagers were able to move to a permanent housing base, the "New Laiyi Community," where they were able to settle down, finally.
